What saved Qasiym’s life, it would sound arrogant to say instincts, it would also be false. Could say luck, but in so many ways that would be neglecting the presence of God. What it was though, was a barrette. He had stopped, bent over and picked up a barrette, just as Jet pulled the trigger. Vail, in turn paused, looked sideways to see what Qasiym was doing. Hell, there could be an ambush or trap anywhere and he was picking shit up off the floor. Then piercing heat streaked across his temple. To his right a guy dressed in black jumped up from the shadows. The bullet that was supposed to be lodged in his brain, struck the other guy in the shoulder and blood splattered into Xavier’s face.

From the middle, Xavier pushed Kenya backwards. He only had a matter of seconds to get a grip on the situation. Vail was in trouble, Qasiym could handle his own, or so he hoped.

The boy turning his head the second he pulled the trigger surprised Jet. Seeing the bullet hit Tyler, put him off guard, but he recovered in time to see the darker, shorter boy bringing up a larger caliber weapon to the ready. He threw his left foot out, like lightning and kicked the gun. It discharged loudly in the hallway, tumbled into the air and landed in the girl’s lap. Xavier was more than a little stunned. Jet seized this opportunity to point his weapon at Xavier, but Vail grabbed his hand. Jet shot his elbow into Vail’s midsection. “Uh!” Twisted funnily and brought Vail’s long form over his shoulder and flipped him to the floor on his back, simultaneously shooting the heel of his foot out and connecting solidly in Xavier’s stomach. The power in Jet’s kick elevated Xavier and sent him to the floor.

“Mmmgghh!” Jet yelled as he tried to wrestle his gun away from Vail, who was stretched out on the floor.

He kicked him in the stomach. “Ugh!” Vail exclaimed in pain.

Xavier was back on his feet, executed a jump kick with all power he could muster to Jet’s midsection. “Ah!” That was Jet. He released Vail and the gun, turned on Xavier swinging a wild backhand and menacing growl. Xavier ducked and threw a punch into Jet’s midsection that Jet blocked. Jet threw a kick that was blocked. Xavier was unable to defend the two-handed lunge into his chest hurling him into the wall. Then Jet fell into him, blood slipping from his lips before sliding to his knees and collapsing to the floor. Behind him Vail stood clutching Jet’s gun, his hands trembling. Xavier nodded his head at Vail, a silent ‘thanks.’ Vail nodded back, returning a silent ‘yeah.’

Qasiym was in a fight for his life. The bullet wound to the man’s shoulder had not slowed him at all. Already Tyler had gone after his eyes twice, his throat twice and kept him on defense the entire time. Thank goodness he had defense. Tyler
